Oregon freeze Dry's Research & Development Center is equipped
with kitchens, pilot processing, freeze drying, and packaging
equipment. An experienced team of scientists, engineers and microbiologists
can develop new products from concept to full-scale manufacturing.
Proven Applications
Oregon Freeze Dry is a leader in the preservation of viable microorganisms,
including lactic acid bacteria, pseudomonads and similar strains,
and viable fungi. Oregon Freeze Dry also processes enzymes, antibodies
and botanicals.
Oregon Freeze Dry freeze dries specialty and pharmaceutical chemicals
out of aqueous solutions and suspensions, water/alcohol mixtures
and hydrocarbons. Many of these are heat-shear, or oxygen-sensitive
materials for which other drying methods are impractical or have
serious shortcomings. Significant economic benefits can also be
realized through improvements in dispersibility, surface area,
retention of functional morphology, primary particle size or yield.
Why Freeze Dry?
The freeze drying process, also known as lyophilization or sublimation,
has many advantages over other processing methods. Since freeze
drying is achieved at lower pressures and temperatures than other
methods, it is an inherently gentle process.
Freeze Drying/Lyophilization is a low pressure, low temperature
process. During this process, called sublimation, the product
remains frozen while the water or other solvent goes directly
from the solid phase to the vapor phase without passing through
the liquid phase. For food products, freeze drying maintains the
products' original appearance, texture and flavor, and provides
more rapid rehydration than other dehydration methods. For chemicals
and biological materials, freeze drying can provide functional
properties unattainable by other drying methods.
