Calibration Services
NWML calibrates or verifies all the Local Standards held by trading
standards departments across the UK and these standards in turn
form the basis for checking all trade measurements. An indication
of the importance of this function is that trade measurements
apply to some 10% of the UK’s GDP.
NWML also provides an expert calibration service to industry
which facilitates traceability of measurement to national or international
standards in order to comply with the requirements of the ISO9000
or 17025 quality standards.
An advisory service is available from NWML’s professional
staff who are happy to provide impartial advice on straightforward
issues; if the problem is more complex customers can choose to
use our consultancy service.
Mass
NWML maintains mass standards above E1 level as part of a comprehensive
mass calibration capability.

Manufacture and calibration of solid stainless steel standards
of mass can be undertaken up to 2.5 tonnes the weights being made
to a standard design or to your own specification.
NWML can supply a wide range of weights from a variety of manufacturers
from stock. Cast iron weight refurbishment services are also available
Length
NWML maintains world-class laser-based length calibration benches
which are housed in purpose-built laboratories. The facilities
are based on Hewlett-Packard helium-neon laser interferometers
and custom-built track and carriage systems. This service has
full UKAS accreditation for the calibration of line standards
and measures up to 50 metres and above in 50 m multiples from
the lowest to the highest quality.

Rigid line standards can be calibrated by direct comparison with
the laser wavelength. The mounting for the standard is of a design
to allow for all the commonly met cross-sections (H, flat &
bevelled).
Flexible line standards can be calibrated either by comparison
with NWML standard tapes or by direct comparison with a laser.
Volume
NWML has the capability to calibrate vessels from micro-pipettes
dispensing a few microlitres to proving tanks which are large
volumetric standards with capacities of several thousand litres.
UKAS accreditation is held for the gravimetric (inferring the
volume from the weight of a liquid discharged or contained) calibration
of metal measures, both content and delivery over the range 1
to 500 litres with a best measurement capability of 0.008% of
volume.
NWML has the capability to calibrate volumetrically, by discharge
of a transfer liquid from a delivery vessel content vessels, ranging
from small laboratory glassware to large proving tanks containing
thousands of litres. Calibration of large vessels is usually carried
out in-situ.
NWML supply and calibrate micro-pipettes over the range 0.1 microlitres
to 10 millilitres to BS EN ISO8655-6 : 2002.
NWML is currently UKAS accredited for micro-pipettes
over the range 20 µL - 1mL.
NWML will also service and make any necessary repairs to micro-pipettes
as well as supplying new micro-pipettes, providing a one stop
service.
