Risks in the Pharmaceutical Industry
Given the international scope and dynamic nature and of the pharmaceutical
industry, its participants, whether large, publicly-traded companies
or privately-held specialty companies, face a wide range of risks.
Among the more prevalent issues faced by the pharmaceutical industry
today are:
 |
Product counterfeiting |
 |
Product diversion and gray market activity |
 |
Product piracy |
 |
Theft of trade secrets |
 |
Violation of intellectual property |
 |
Economic espionage |
 |
Physical/plant security |
 |
Eco-terrorism |
Almost every large capitalization and numerous smaller pharmaceutical
companies have been targeted by counterfeiters and diverters and
have had their products stolen, either by external parties or
through internal fraud. In addition, the theft of trade secrets
and other proprietary knowledge, methods and procedures is a constant
workplace threat. In extreme cases, a number of pharmaceutical
companies have had their facilities – domestically and abroad
– targeted by eco-terrorists such as militant animal rights
activists. The most recent high profile attack in the U.S. was
the August 2003 bombing of a Chiron Corporation facility in California.
