Drug
Discovery Ltd – The Company
Drug Discovery Ltd was formed in 1998 to undertake the commercial
development of the natural products-based activities of the Strathclyde
Institute for Drug Research. For more than a decade, SIDR has been
at the forefront of building a global collection of natural products
and developing technologies to extract and screen potential drugs
from them.
Drug Discovery is expanding its natural product library and developing
proprietary technologies for its own in-house drug discovery programmes
in several therapeutic areas including cancer, asthma, allergies,
arthritis and pain. The natural products library has been reformatted
into industry-standard microtiter plates which are available for
high throughput screening by customers. The Company also provides
its expertise in natural products and its analytical and screening
technologies to pharmaceutical companies under contract.
Key Personnel
Dr Alan Harvey (Managing Director) was the founding
Director of the Strathclyde Institute for Drug Research, an interdisciplinary
research organisation created in 1988 at the University of Strathclyde
to promote commercially relevant drug research.
Dr Harvey's specific research interests include the pharmacology
of drugs and toxins affecting excitable membranes and drug discovery
based on natural products. He is the discoverer of dendrotoxins,
a new class of potassium channel blockers.
Dr Iain Stuart is head of chemical services. He
has an extensive background in developing chromatographic and analytical
methods for natural materials.
Carol Clements is head of cellular assays. She
has more than 10 years experience of biological assay development
and considerable expertise in the use of biologically active natural
products for pharmaceutical and agrochemical applications.
Louise Young is head of biochemical assays. She
has ten years experience of pharmacology and developing assays suitable
for high throughput screening of natural products.
Scientific Advisory Board
Members of Drug Discovery's Scientific Advisory Board have an exceptional
range of experience in natural products research, pharmacology,
and pharmaceutical development.
Professor William C. Bowman is founding Professor
of Pharmacology at the University of Strathclyde and has considerable
experience in the pharmacology of drugs acting on nerves and muscles.
He is author of a standard textbook of pharmacology and over 150
scientific articles.
Dr Desmond Fitzgerald has held academic posts
as Professor of Medicine at McMaster University, Ontario and as
visiting Professor, McGill University, Montreal. He worked in ICI
Pharmaceuticals Division (now AstraZeneca) as Manager of Bioscience
and then General Manager of Research, finally being appointed to
the Board as International Medical Director. He currently advises
pharmaceutical companies on drug discovery and development.
Professor J.B. Harborne (FRS) is the world's foremost
phytochemist. Based at the University of Reading since 1968 he has
many international research collaborations and has been honoured
with several major international awards and prizes for his work.
Central themes of his research career have been the identification
of anti-fungal and flavour compounds from plants.
Professor D.H. Janzen, a Professor of Biology
at the University of Pennsylvania, is an ecologist who has spent
over 30 years studying the relationships between animals and plants
in Costa Rican tropical forests. Dan Janzen has published over 330
scientific articles and books. He is a member of the US National
Academy of Sciences, and he has been awarded several international
prizes and scientific honours, including the Crafoord Prize from
the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences.
Professor P.G. Waterman is co-founder of Drug
Discovery Ltd. He has over 30 years experience of isolating and
identifying natural products from plants and other sources. He has
published over 300 scientific papers and is founding director of
the Centre for Phytochemistry at Southern Cross University, NSW,
Australia.
