Biological Databases – The Company
In the post genome era two problems increasingly affect researchers
in the life-science industry as well as in non-profit organisations:
exploding amounts of information, combined with the quest for
the most efficient and highest quality laboratory results. With
the amount of available genomic data rapidly growing, the need
for interpretation of raw sequence data becomes increasingly essential.
However, even identifying all the genes and their functions will
only be a first step; there will still be a significant dearth
of knowledge regarding complex regulatory networks.
Recognizing this problem in the early 1980´s, Dr. Edgar
Wingender (the leader of the Research Group at the GBF - German
Research Centre for Biotechnology, Braunschweig, Germany) began
gathering information around the complex field of gene regulation.
This led to the creation of the first database on transcription
factors, TRANSFAC®.
Due to the demand for high quality solutions in the field of
bioinformatics, the decision was made to professionalize and commercialize
the TRANSFAC® database. Incorporating the technological vision
of Holger Karas, Dr. Thomas Heinemeyer, and Dr. Ingmar Reuter,
Dr. Edgar Wingender founded BIOBASE Biological Databases/Biologische
Datenbanken GmbH in 1997.
The TRANSFAC® Professional database - already the gold standard
in this field - became the foundation of a complex suite of databases
(the TRANSFAC® System) and bioinformatics tools enabling the
analysis of regulatory processes. Only 3 years later, we have
become the leading content provider in the field of gene regulation.
Our three lines of business - biological databases, bioinformatics
tools, and scientific consulting - provide scientists with complex
molecular biology information of the highest quality with an emphasis
on gene regulatory processes such as transcriptional control and
signal transduction.
