Schering-Plough Corp. (Madison, NJ) has awarded the engineering, procurement, and construction management (EPC) contract for a new USD 100 million biotech plant to Jacobs Lend Lease, a joint venture of Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. (Pasadena, CA) and Bovis Lend Lease (London, UK).
The companies plan to build the plant, which will produce a new hepatitis C drug, on a 12-acre site next to an existing Schering-Plough bulk manufacturing plant in Tuas, Singapore.
Front-end engineering and detailed design will be shared between Jacobs Lend Lease offices in Dublin, Ireland, and Singapore, with Singapore responsible for the full implementation of the construction. Local techniques for structural and architectural elements will be applied and integrated with a high degree of clean room finishes, all complying to standards set by the United States Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) and the international specifications of Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP).
The project involves the construction of a 4-storey building block spanning 65,000 sqm. and comprises areas for administration, laboratory, plant-room, production and warehouse. There will also be a utility block for chiller units, cooling tower, tank farm and plant facilities. Completion is expected within three-and-a-half years.
